A decade delivering road safety and sustainability workshops in schools

Grundon is celebrating 10 years of delivering its road safety and sustainability workshops to local schools, helping many young people build awareness around staying safe near large goods vehicles (LGVs) and making sure they are correctly disposing of their waste.

Since launching the initiative in 2016, Grundon has visited various schools and engaged with more than 1,500 pupils across the communities in which we operate in. Through interactive hands-on sessions, the programme is designed to bring important safety messages to life in a practical and memorable way.

Grundon marked a decade of its annual road safety and sustainability workshops for schools with a visit to Wellesley Prep School in Hampshire on Tuesday 2 June.

Led by Tex Bourton, Operational Training Manager, the sessions gave pupils a real-world insight into the challenges LGV drivers face on busy roads and the importance of staying visible and aware around large vehicles.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for the children to explore an electric waste collection vehicle up close. Children learned about the vehicles safety features, including cameras, warning systems and visibility aids, designed to help protect both the drivers and members of the public. They also watched demonstrations showing how bins are lifted, emptied and waste is compacted, helping bring the waste collection process to life.

Pupils and teachers were also invited to sit inside the cab of the vehicle to experience the view from the driver’s seat. This helped demonstrate the blind spots around large vehicles and reinforced the importance of road awareness for pedestrians and cyclists.

Alongside the road safety activities, pupils tested their recycling knowledge through an interactive waste sorting exercise with Alex Grant, Sustainability Manager. By identifying which materials belong in general waste, recycling and food waste streams, the pupils learned how small everyday actions help improve recycling rates both at home and at school.

Over the past decade Grundon’s Road Safety Week programme has become an important part of the company’s wider commitment to supporting the local communities through education and engagement. By combining practical demonstrations with hands-on learning, the initiative continues to help young people develop a better understanding of road safety and sustainability from a young age.
