We understand the challenges of disposing of WEEE safely and compliantly

Electrical waste is produced by almost every business, but managing WEEE isn’t always straightforward. With strict regulations to follow, different types of electrical equipment to consider and the need for reliable collection and recycling, it can be difficult to know where to start.

Many businesses also face challenges when it comes to safely storing electrical waste on-site. In some cases, electrical items such as IT equipment may also contain sensitive data, so secure handling and disposal is an important consideration.

Without the right support in place, WEEE can quickly become too much to manage, increasing the risk of non-compliance. With our expert guidance and tailored solutions, we can help make managing your WEEE straight forward, safe and fully compliant.

Frequently asked questions

What is classed as WEEE waste?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and can be any discarded item that uses electricity or batteries.

This includes (but not limited to):

  • Computers
  • Printers
  • Televisions
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Lighting
  • Cables
  • Small electrical devices, such as mobile phones or power banks

How to dispose of WEEE?

WEEE should be disposed of through licensed disposal or recycling providers. Businesses should not place electrical items in general waste as they require specialist handling and recycling and can also pose a fire risk if disposed of incorrectly.

The process of recycling WEEE includes, sorting, disassembly and shredding to separate materials. Metals, plastics, glass and other components are recycled into new products.

Do businesses have legal responsibilities when disposing of WEEE?

Yes, every business have a legal duty to dispose of WEEE safely and in accordance with UK regulations. Electrical waste must be handled by authorised carriers, like Grundon, and taken to approved recycling or treatment facilities.

Failing to comply with WEEE regulations can result in fines, environmental penalties and reputational damage.

Working with Grundon for your WEEE waste helps ensure your business remains compliant while protecting the environment.

Where does WEEE go after collection?

Once your WEEE has been collected, it is transported to Grundon’s licensed Hazardous Waste Transfer Station, situated in Ewelme, Oxfordshire.

At this facility it is safely sorted and prepared for further treatment. Electrical waste is sent for recycling so that valuable materials can be recovered and reused. Any remaining materials that cannot be recycled are treated using appropriate recovery or disposal methods.

With Grundon’s treatment and recycling facilities, you can be confident that your WEEE is handled responsibly.

What happens to WEEE after it is processed?

Once WEEE has been collected and processed through Grundon’s facilities, it is handled and assessed by our degree-trained team of ChemPack chemists.

They will take every opportunity to identify waste that can be recovered, reprocessed or recycled.

For example, our cable granulation facility strips plastic or rubber sleeves from cables and granulates it into pellets ready for reconstitution. Copper in cables can be granulated into a coarse powder and sent for metal reclamation.

My business only produces a small volume of WEEE waste. Can you still help?

Yes. We support businesses of all sizes, including those producing small volumes of WEEE. Our Haz Box service is designed specifically for low-volume hazardous waste, including WEEE.
