Recycle Week 2025: Rescue these everyday items from the wrong bin

Recycle Week 2025 is here and it’s all about giving everyday thrown away items a second chance. Running from 22-28 September, this year’s theme ‘Rescue Me! Recycle’ brings to life the things we often forget can be recycled.

Now in its 22nd year, Recycle Week is a movement supported by communities and businesses across the UK to shine a light on everyday actions that can lead to real change. Every small action adds up and by rescuing these items through recycling can make a big impact.

With a particular focus this year on trigger spray bottles, aerosols, toilet roll tubes, shampoo bottles and yoghurt pots, it’s a reminder that by recycling these overlooked items we can keep valuable materials in use for longer.

Aerosols

Aerosols such as deodorant, hair spray or air fresheners, can be recycled if they are placed in dedicated bins. This is because they require specialist recycling. It’s important we capture them though, as most aerosols are made from aluminium or steel, both of which are endlessly recyclable. If you have a Haz-Box, just pop them in there.

The aerosols are then sent to our aerosol reprocessing facility, where every part of the aerosol is recycled and recovered!

Trigger spray and shampoo bottles

Both trigger spray and shampoo bottles can be recycled once rinsed out. Trigger spray bottles are usually made from HDPE and PET plastic, the most commonly recycled plastic. Most shampoo bottles, along with some other bathroom items, are also made from HDPE, so remember to throw these in the mixed recycling bin.

Toilet roll tubes

Toilet roll tubes are often forgotten but they’re fully recyclable along with other paper or card. These can then be remade into other paper products such as egg cartons. Place these in your mixed recycling bin.

Yoghurt pots

Plastic yoghurt pots just need a rinse out and then can be accepted in mixed recycling bins. Alternatively, you could reuse them at home or in the office – they make a great storage container for small everyday items.
