Three headline tips for reducing event waste and boosting recycling

Event season is in full swing, so roll out the red carpet as we introduce our new Events Sales Manager, Joe Powell!

From music festivals to county shows and sporting fixtures, events bring plenty of excitement, but they also bring a surprising amount of waste.

Did you know the event industry is estimated to produce over 100,000 tonnes of waste annually in the UK? That’s enough to fill 130 Olympic size swimming pools! But with a few thoughtful changes, you can reduce the environmental impact without affecting the quality of your event.

Keep reading, as Joe shares his top three tips to help you cut down on waste and boost recycling – putting waste management centre stage.

1. Signage

Think of signage as your headline act – it draws attention.

Eye-catching and clear signage is the easiest way to tell attendees exactly what goes in what bin. Use colours, icons and simple wording to direct them to the right bins and avoid contamination.

Ultimately good signage leads to less confusion, resulting in cleaner recycling streams.

2. Bin Stations

Signage and bin stations work hand in hand.

At events, people tend to use the nearest bin without thinking twice. But if that bin doesn’t suit the waste in their hand, contamination quickly builds up. That’s where bin station setups come in.

By placing grouped bins for multiple waste streams together – like general waste, recycling and food waste – you make it easier for attendees to choose the right option on the spot. It’s about visibility, convenience and giving people the tools to do the right thing.

3. Planning Ahead

Every successful event starts with great planning, and waste management is no exception.

Start early, and you’ll have time to bring in the right crew. Whether it’s our team advising on bins and waste streams or your cleaning contractors getting on board with the plan, the earlier everyone’s in the loop, the better your chances are of things going to plan.
