This article forms part of our AI at Grundon series, where we’re shining a light on the great ways in which we’re using Artificial Intelligence to enhance our operations.
In 2024, Grundon invested in Samsara, a vehicle telematics and safety measure system, that has helped enhance our safety standards and environmental sustainability efforts. During the trial period, we saw an impressive 71% reduction in detected events compared to the baseline period, measured over four weeks.
The AI-driven system actively monitors and improves driver behaviour by detecting unsafe actions, such as phone use, failure to wear seatbelts and harsh braking. Additionally, it enhances fuel efficiency by tracking idling periods and fuel wastage, giving us actionable insights to cut unnecessary emissions and reduce costs.
Samsara’s real-time reporting capabilities also help flag vehicle issues as they occur, allowing for quicker diagnostics, faster repairs and reduced downtime, keeping our fleet moving safely and efficiently.
But the benefits don’t stop there.
Beyond enhancing safety and efficiency, AI is transforming how we train and develop our drivers. By detecting potential issues early on, it helps strengthen positive habits from day one.
Positive reinforcement is another key benefit – safe driving behaviours that once went unnoticed are now being acknowledged and recognised, creating a more supportive environment for our team.
The system’s detailed reports also give us clear insights into each driver’s performance, helping to identify key learning opportunities and areas for improvement.
In this short video, hear directly from Chris Double, Regional Operations Manager, Sandra De Gouveia, Transport Office Coordinator and Steve Plaister, Transport Supervisor, as they share their thoughts on how Samsara is making a difference at Grundon.
