on our journey...

The initial spark

Moving our plans into overdrive

Our commitment to cutting the carbon emissions from our collection vehicle fleet goes beyond investing in our fully electric-powered collection vehicles. In 2018, we added an ultra-low emission hydrogen/diesel dual-fuel collection vehicle to our fleet. This was followed by two industry-leading electric forklifts for our Hazardous Waste Transfer Station in June 2022.

The next step? Turning our company car fleet fully electric.

The initial spark

In 2000, we implemented our carbon reduction programme. Since then Grundon has gone from strength to strength. Our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions never wavered and since the inception of the programme, our emissions have reduced by almost 80% despite our business growing.

Our next landmark moment was in 2014 when we became the first of the major waste industry players to commit to a CarbonNeutral® fleet certification programme. It's enabled us to:

  • Purchase carbon credits to offset our vehicle emissions

  • Support life-changing rural community projects in Uganda

  • Reduce our customers' carbon footprint

Switching up our strategy

We aren’t done yet! We’re continuously searching for ways to further minimise the environmental impact of our vehicle fleet. We’ve already started by powering our electric vehicles with our customers’ non-recyclable waste. We take it to Energy from Waste facilities where it’s used to create electricity for the National Grid and in turn, it charges up our fleet to start the cycle again.

We believe the future of electric vehicles is bright, but we also want to embrace alternative low-emission fuel sources. Ultimately, our aim is to add hydrogen-powered vehicles to our fleet.

Our aspiration is to use our customer’s waste to create hydrogen fuel to power our next generation of sustainable collection vehicles.

Closing the loop

How our customers’ waste power our electric vehicle fleet

Waste Collection

We collect non-recyclable general waste from our customers.

Prepared for Combustion

It’s taken to an Energy from Waste facility where the waste is incinerated to create heat

Combustion

The heat powers a high-pressure steam turbine which generates electricity for the National Grid

Electricity

Some of this electricity is used to charge our electric vehicle fleet

Collect More Waste

This enables us to collect more waste – and the circuit is complete!
