Grundon was pleased to be a sponsor of the 4th annual Recycling Retail Waste conference organised by MRW, held in London at the end of February.
Over 120 delegates from around the UK met to hear about the latest environmental issues to affect the retail sector. Speakers including representatives from Argos, Environment Agency, LARAC, Severnside Recycling, Valpak and WRAP outlined some of the challenges ahead, and also gave some examples of best practice in addressing waste collection & recycling targets and meeting environmental performance standards.
Of particular interest were the sessions by DEFRA and LARAC. Anju Sharda, DEFRA’s Policy Advisor on portable batteries summarised the progress on development of legislation for implementation of the Battery Directive, due to come into effect in September, and which will have significant implications for major retailers of portable or ‘dry cell’ batteries. A second stage in the consultation process is scheduled for the end of June 2008. For more information visit http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/topics/batteries/index.htm
Joy Blizzard at LARAC made a plea for ‘joined up thinking’ when applying producer responsibility principles to packaging waste, and in particular for manufacturers to ‘design out’ excess packaging at source, rather than simply expect local authorities to recycle it on their behalf.
