The operating team at the Lakeside Energy from Waste facility - a joint venture of Grundon Waste Management and Viridor - was announced as the winner of the Peel People’s Cup for 2011 last week. This prestigious trophy is awarded by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management to individuals rather than organisations and recognises excellence in the operating team of a licensed or permitted waste management facility.
The scope of the award includes all types of recycling or waste treatment facility such as commercial scale recycling and composting, energy from waste sites, household waste recycling facilities, landfills and many other operations.
Judges look for evidence of excellence in site supervision, operational features, teamwork, staff welfare, safety, data management, local acceptability, environmental impact, aesthetics, plant maintenance and general impressions.
Judge and past president of the CIWM, Terry March, said: “Lakeside is a marvellous advertisement for the best of the new technology waste industry which clearly demonstrates that however good the facility, it is the team that operates it which makes it special. They have an overall exceptional team approach and give out a tangible feeling of pride in the operation and what they do. The highly-motivated team demonstrates the key principles of commitment, communication and a deep sense of pride in what they do.
“It is an outstanding facility and the staff are an extremely knowledgeable, proud, articulate, enthusiastic, mutually supportive team who work as a unit in fulfilment of their shared objectives.”
Danny Coulston, general manager at the Lakeside facility said: “We are all delighted to win this award. It’s great to have recognition from the professional institution for our sector for the fantastic job done by the whole team at Lakeside.
“Lots of people comment on the design of the Lakeside building without knowing what it actually is. Since we began operating in 2010, we have all been determined to work to the highest standards, helping to safely turn waste from households and businesses into much-needed electrical power.
“We are all proud of our facility and the systems we have in place to get the job done. As manager, I am especially proud of the team ethic we’ve built and the contribution every member of the team makes.”
