Family owned British company Grundon Waste Management Limited is proposing to develop an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant capable of processing in the order of 90,000 tonnes of waste per annum on the site of the Shore Road Transfer Station, currently owned and operated by Holden Environmental Limited. Permission for the facility, situated in an existing industrial area, was granted by Perth & Kinross Council in March 2006.
The EfW plant will offer a sustainable waste management solution for the residues left over after recycling household and commercial waste, by using them to generate non-fossil fuel energy – rather than simply landfilling them.
Discussions are being held with potential end users of the energy generated by the plant, including Perth Prison, with the excess power exported to the National Grid. Such energy, used close to where it is produced, is an example of the best practice promoted in the UK Government’s recently published Energy Review and is known as Distributed Energy. It means there is a reduced need for high voltage networks to transport power long distances and brings power generation to a community level.
Stringent environmental controls would be designed into the plant, which would be monitored by Grundon, SEPA and Perth & Kinross Council. The EfW facility would meet all the appropriate European and National emission controls and environmental standards.
Grundon Managing Director, Richard MacAndrew Skehens, says,
“Shore Road is ideally located to reduce HGV movements within and out of town. The facility will offer a long term sustainable solution to waste management for residents and businesses – recycling local waste and turning the remainder into local energy for local use.
“Although Grundon is new to the area, we are a well established integrated waste management company, providing a range of services to both the public and private sector.
“We recently celebrated our 75th birthday by signing agreements to build a 400,000 tonne per annum EfW plant near Slough, west of London.”
