The best practical and environmental option for recycling of household waste is to separate at source. This ensures that the sorted clean recyclable material can be easily processed and bulked for reprocessing into new products.
To maximise the amount of source separated materials that can be recycled, Grundon working in partnership with local authorities, processes Mixed Recyclables collected from kerbside and bring site schemes at its purpose built Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs). The materials that are recovered for recycling include:
Many Hazardous Wastes can now be recovered for recycling, these include: Paints, Inks, Adhesives, Solvents, Batteries, Aerosols, Oil & Oil Filters, Gas Cylinders, Fire Extinguishers, Fluorescent Tubes, Sodium Bulbs, Fridges & Freezers, WEEE, Contaminated Metal Packaging.
Grundon currently operate four Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), one at Slough, Leatherhead, Reading and another at Oxford. Together these facilities have an annual processing capacity in excess of 100,000 tonnes. The first three facilities process:
The material recovered includes paper, card, metals and plastics.
Our MRF at Oxford processes construction waste and recovers 75% of all plastics, timber, brick, concrete, aggregates and metals.
However Grundon do believe that this is only a back up service to recycling initiatives within organisations as recycling at source has been proved to be the most successful route to take. Therefore Grundon provide several services for source-separated materials including Wheeled Bins for Mixed Glass, Office Paper and plastics and larger containers for cardboard and Mixed Recyclables. We would hope to expand on these services in the future.
