Incineration remains the only acceptable waste disposal technique for a significant proportion of the clinical waste generated by the healthcare and associated service sectors. Grundon recognised the importance of incineration for clinical waste and constructed Britain's first ever purpose-designed Clinical Waste incineration plant at Colnbrook, near Heathrow in 1989. The facility and the regulatory controls have been subsequently modified by an IPC Authorisation in 1993 with various minor and major variations including a variation authorising operation in compliance with Hazardous Waste Incineration Directive. A Radioactive Waste Authorisation was issued in 1997. The plant is also authorised by DEFRA / HSE for destruction of GMO Waste, Animal By-Product Waste, Foot and Mouth Disease Waste.
The operation of the plant conforms to the Environmental Management Standard ISO14001, an internationally recognised quality assurance standard. Gaseous emissions are also continuously monitored and recorded to ensure that the plant performance betters standards required under UK and EC legislation.

Modern high temperature clinical waste incinerators must conform to an enormous number of extremely wide-ranging and increasingly stringent regulatory controls. As part of the re-development of the Colnbrook site for the Lakeside Energy from Waste project, Grundon have taken the opportunity to build a new Clinical Waste Incinerator. Details regarding the application and the new plant are available in the pdf document entitled 'Clinical Waste Incinerator - Non Technical Summary' at the foot of this page. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2005 and for the new facility to be operational by September 2006.
