Green Waste Treatment Facility...

Site

Composting ImageThe green waste treatment facility at Beenham near Reading has been operational since January 2003. One of the few large-scale in-vessel composting sites in the country at that time, Grundon initially chose the Pod system as it eradicated many of the problems associated with the traditional method of open windrows, such as odour and litter.

In February 2009 the operation changed from a composting site to a facility for the receipt and pre-treatment of green waste, the management and operation of which is sub-contracted to Good 2 Grow Recycling Ltd.

Please note that as a result of this change Grundon is no longer able to supply PAS 100 soil conditioner. Existing customer contracts with Grundon for treatment of green waste are unaffected.

Process

Composting ImageThe Beenham site is capable of processing up to 25,000 tonnes of green waste per year. The reception area consists of a large sealed surface concrete pad, with all run-off draining to two storage lagoons. Under the new process, green waste is received in the reception area and checked for contamination, before being shredded and mixed. The material is then transferred to local farmers and landowners where it is ploughed into the ground. This is a very cost effective method for the management of green waste and is approved and regulated by The Environment Agency. The shredding process operates under a Paragraph 21 exemption from the Environmental Permitting Regulations, and the production of the green waste / sand mix soil improver operates under a Paragraph 13 exemption.
