What is hazardous waste?

Almost without exception, every business produces hazardous waste. Hazardous waste is defined as any waste that may be harmful to human health, the environment or both. Waste is considered to be hazardous when it contains substances or has properties that make it caustic, carcinogenic, corrosive, ecotoxic, flammable, harmful, infectious, irritant, mutagenic, toxic or an oxidising agent.

This includes:
  • Acid descalers
  • Adhesives
  • Aerosols
  • Batteries
  • Caustic Soda
  • Cleaning chemicals
  • Contaminated rags wipes and absorbents
  • Drummed and tinned oils
  • Fluorescent light tubes and sodium bulbs
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Gas cylinders
  • Inks
  • Oil filters
  • Paints
  • Photo chemicals
  • Resins
  • Solvents
  • Thinners
  • Toners
  • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Other words commonly associated with waste that help to identify it as hazardous include aerosol, contaminated, fluorescent, interceptor, laboratory, nuclear and radioactive.

Why does hazardous waste need special treatment?

Many everyday products found in the workplace are classed as hazardous waste, meaning that you may no longer dispose of them with your general waste.

Hazardous waste needs special treatment because of its potential to harm people, the environment or both. The management of hazardous waste, including its collection, recycling and disposal, is subject to increasingly stringent and rigorous regulations – namely the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005.

What does this mean to me?

In practice, it means that the management, collection, treatment and disposal of your hazardous waste is a job for expert professional operators. In other words people with the right experience, expertise and resources.
