Food Waste Collection and Recycling
Grundon’s dedicated food waste collection and recycling service helps you to reduce the amount of food waste being sent to landfill – meaning that not only can you reduce your carbon footprint, but it can also reduce your costs by reducing the amount of landfill tax that you pay. By segregating your food waste it can be diverted from landfill and recycled to produce agricultural compost and renewable energy.
Our food waste collection and recycling service is targeted at the hospitality, catering and retail sectors, including:
• Restaurants
• Hotels
• Pubs
• Clubs
• Fast food outlets
• Canteens
• Food processing facilities
Why recycle food waste?
Throwing away food is a huge waste of energy and the resources used to produce, package, transport and store it. The majority of food waste is currently sent to landfill, where as it biodegrades it releases greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, which contribute to climate change. Due to this pollution it is widely expected that Government will ban food waste from landfill in the near future.
By recycling your food waste you can reduce the amount of food sent to landfill and reduce your carbon footprint. Did you know that if everyone in the UK were to recycle all of our food waste it would have the same greenhouse gas impact as taking one in four cars off the nation’s roads?
Food waste also weighs considerably more than other comparative waste streams such as general waste or mixed recyclables. This means that by recycling your food waste and sending less to landfill you would significantly cut the amount of landfill tax you have to pay.
Food waste collected and recycled via our service is taken to an Anaerobic Digestion facility, where naturally occurring micro-organisms break down the food waste to produce biogas and a nutrient-rich fertiliser called digestate used for agriculture and in land regeneration. The biogas is converted into renewable electricity in gas engines and is fed to the National Grid.
What are the benefits of Grundon’s food waste service?
Our food waste collection and recycling service does have many other benefits.
We’ve introduced new 120 litre food waste bins which, unlike existing 240 bins used by other providers, are designed for in-kitchen use. The bins fit neatly under-the-counter in food preparation areas. One benefit of this is that you can see at a glance what is going into them.
Lighter and easier to manoeuvre, these can reduce the potential for manual handling injuries and can be easily weighed at the point of collection.
The bins do not required any liners or bags and feature clip down non-spill sealed lids. This means that not only can you use them for easy disposal of cooking oils and liquids, but the secure design eliminates access to pest, such as rodents and flies.
We offer a bin exchange scheme, ensuring that when we take away your full bin, you have a fully sanitised clean bin to go straight back into the kitchen. Our weighing facility ensures simple reporting of food waste tonnages and our new software provides easy monitoring and trend tracking of the food waste you are recycling.
