What is clinical waste?
Clinical waste is defined as any waste which is made up, completely or partly of human and animal tissue. This includes:
• Body fluids
• Drugs and other pharmaceutical products
• Swabs and dressings
• Syringes, needles and other sharp instruments which have been used in a clinical environment
Why does clinical waste need special treatment?
Clinical waste needs special treatment because of its potential to infect or harm people or animals. The management of clinical waste, including its collection and disposal, is subject to increasingly stringent and rigorous regulations.
What does this mean to me?
In practice, it means that the management, collection, treatment and disposal of your clinical waste is a job for expert professional operators. In other words people with the right experience, expertise and resources.
How can Grundon help you?
We have trained and knowledgeable staff with experience in designing waste management systems that are right for you and include all of the necessary licences and consents. Our dedicated healthcare account managers work with our major NHS clients to help them achieve their waste and sustainability objectives.
We also operate our own fleet of specialist collection vehicles and ADR (Carriage of Dangerous Goods Certified) trained drivers, in addition to our range of state-of-the-art, industry leading treatment and disposal facilities.
Grundon understand the challenges faced by the healthcare sector, including budget pressures. That is why Grundon will work in partnership with you to realise innovation and service improvements that reduce costs, improve efficiencies and improve environmental performance.
Value added service
At Grundon, we are committed to working in partnership with you to promote recycling and educate your staff. The aim is to raise awareness of both the financial and environmental benefits that effective waste management can have on your operation and its sustainability.
We conduct an analysis of your waste streams to identify the volume and types of waste generated. Once the analysis is complete and any recyclable materials have been identified, we design a bespoke clinical waste recycling collection service that best fits your operation.
We then provide you with colour coded and clearly labelled bags and containers for the separation of individual clinical waste streams.
As part of our value added service we can work with your existing cleaning contractor to put in place procedures that ensure recyclable waste streams are internally collected, separated and that segregation is maintained. The most important aspect of ensuring segregation is getting ‘buy in’ from your staff on-site – whether they be directly employed or contracted.
We actively promote the benefits of recycling and our waste disposal procedures to your employees, ensuring that they are fully aware.
We report back to you on the volumes of waste collected, recycling volumes and the disposal methods used. This ensures that you are kept fully aware of your performance – this is critical in helping you to become a sustainable operation – both financially and environmentally.
We also provide auditing of waste streams to prevent contamination occurring.
