CarbonNeutral®  fleet

CarbonNeutral® fleet

We're proud to announce that from 1 January 2014, we have achieved CarbonNeutral® certification across our entire 491-strong road-going vehicle fleet, setting new standards across the waste industry.

Our vehicle fleet is fundamental to our business and carries out a wide range of duties, from earth moving equipment to waste collection and recycling. To minimise the environmental impact of our fleet, we have invested in new environmentally-friendly vehicles and worked with our drivers to provide fuel efficiency training. Despite successfully reducing our fuel consumption per mile year-on-year, our fleet emissions continue to be the largest contributor to our overall carbon footprint.

What does this mean for you?

It means that every time one of our vehicles collects waste from a customer site or a member of the Grundon team visits you in a company car, not only will the journey be CarbonNeutral®, but it will also avoid adding to your own carbon footprint. For our customers, it's a reassurance they are working with a business that is proud of its commitment to the green agenda.

Our partnership with Natural Capital Partners

Since 2014, we have partnered with Natural Capital Partners - a world-leading provider of solutions for positive environmental impact - to offset our residual vehicle emissions. to offset our fleet emissions we chose to support a community reforestation project in Uganda.

With our support over the last three years:

  • 1,187 farmers have joined the community reforestation project in Uganda
  • Forming 185 new small groups
  • Planting a further 1.2 million trees
  • Taking the project to a total of 5.9 million trees across 5,335 hectares - that's equivalent to 3,330 football pitches

We believe that this is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to continue cutting our carbon emissions and, most importantly, it is having a huge benefit for the community in Uganda who we are helping.

The scheme pay's smallhold farmers to plant trees in a bid to help reverse Uganda's trend towards deforestation, reducing soil erosion and improving local biodiversity. The more trees they plant, the more money the farmers are paid, and since the programme began in 2003, nearly 4.5 million trees have been planted. Currently, there are 6,284 members taking part across 691 villages.

Grundon turning Uganda green again

In August 2014, Grundon's Compliance Manager, Toni Robinson and Vivian Frost, Client Relationship Manager at Natural Capital Partners, visited rural Uganda to see first hand the reforestation project being undertaken by local subsistence farmers with support from The International Small Group Tree Planting Programme (TIST).

The scale of the operation Toni and Vivian witnessed in the reforestation project based in the regions around Bushenyi, Kabale and Kanungu is impressive. In addition to the tree planting for carbon sequestration, the project brings many other benefits to the farmers and the communities involved.

Our partnership with The CarbonNeutral Company

We have partnered with The CarbonNeutral Company, a world-leading provider of carbon reduction solutions, investing in a three year programme to offset our vehicle emissions and support a community reforestation project in rural Uganda.
